Cobra XRS 9960G Voice Alert 15-Band Radar/Laser Detector with 1.5-Inch Full-Color Display, GPS Locator, and Red Light/Speed Features Review

Cobra XRS 9960G Voice Alert 15-Band Radar/Laser Detector with 1.5-Inch Full-Color Display, GPS Locator, and Red Light/Speed Features

This is definately not a pretty radar detector. In the days of Apple design, and GPS's looking great and slim, LCD televisions, and kitchen appliances looking and functioning great; there's not a lot of excuse for poor industrial design. More on the construction in a moment.
January 8, 2010 update. The Railroad signal also works, it went off near a railroad track. The Emergency Vehicle alarm has gone off a lot lately, for police cars and Ambulances. Very nice.
The display has gotten a distinct burn in for the speed display (I'm testing Cobra's warranty repair service with this - January 23, 2010 - a brand new core unit arrived quickly, Cobra made good on the warranty, no questions asked). The display does not work at all if you leave the detector in the cold, around freezing. Once the unit warms up it finally works, but it will be an ugly orange for a long time. And see the comments about getting a bean bag mount - the suction cups do not work at all in the cold.
SOFTWARE update - Cobra now offers 64 bit for Vista and XP software. It only took them 6 months to deliver the update. Boo on Cobra for pitiful software support. They get really bad marks for their inability to support their device. Follow the install directions very carefully.
October 10, 2009 update. The Emergency Vehicle alarm finally went off. Another that made me almost jump out of my skin, the noise is a lot like a police siren. A police car was pulling somebody over with siren going. Well before I could hear the siren, the alarm went off on the screen. I had already seen the lights before the alarm went off. If a police car is equiped with a special transmitter, the Cobra will go off.
September 26, 2009 update. Laser detector finally went off. About made me jump out of my skin. The sound is kind of Star Wars, crazy buzzy sound. The goofiest icon come up, its an image of a gun with a laser sight on it. But the good news - it works. Definately works just fine. I've also had some fun with this unit, the Chicago area has a ton of construction with threatened photo radar speed enforcement. The amazing thing, if they ever turn on those radar guns that are out there right now, Chicago will make a ton of money. This unit warns for those guns a long ways in advance, and it beeps like insanity whenever I am on top of one. This thing really works.
June 2, 2009 Tech Support update. Well this is not the fastest company I have ever met. Web support via the web form is pitiful at best. Twice I entered the exact same information and never got a response over a 1 week time period. I finally used an email address (it's buried in an advertisement looking thing on the FAQ's) and got a response within two hours of their normal business hours. And I got a nasty gram from somebody telling me to relax, tech support would get back to me (after over 7 work days, I lost all hope), they did receive all three of my emails. Frankly, a really poor showing on their part. God help you if you need tech support from this company. The FAQ section for the radar detectors is just awful. Pretty well worthless.
Back to Original Review:
The really great news, this radar detector flat out works. It works well. I'm amazed at how well it works. Photo, Ka, X, and Caution Zones - saw them all, they all work just great thank you very much. Haven't seen a laser alert, emergency vehicles, or a Railroad crossing alert yet; but I'd have every reason to believe those will work when they are really there.
The good - 1/2 mile down the road, Ka chirped on, the lovely lady said Ka Alert, and two balls of signal strength. Sure enough, a 1/2 mile later down the raod, a policeman with radar pulled somebody over. Pretty darn good proof the unit can detect radar.
Unboxing - I've posted some pictures of unboxing. It's actually some pretty decent packaging and got my heart rate up just a bit. You see, I used to be addicted to radar detectors. And then Laser came along, and I lost interest, (I'd already been through X band, then get a new one that would do Ka, enough already). Well that whole world has settled down now.
What is in the box? This funky looking radar detector with a big honking screen on the back end of it. And this really hideous half arm, half wart hanging off the side of the body; the GPS receiver. A coiled power cord. A goofy looking female mini-USB to male USB cable. A really crummy cheap window suction cup mount. A chunk of velcro. And an instruction book bag.
The installation. Ouch. The first step, you have to register the GPS and update the database. If you use the wrong model number to register the GPS you'll be ripped off your lifetime Aura database updates. Make sure you use the XRS 9960G model number - not the number on the radar detector. And you have to input the serial number off the little dinky GPS receiver. Once registered, you then have to download and install a little piece of software that will live on your computer forever - it's called RDA GPSL-55 (you got me how they came up with that gorgeous name). Then you are supposed to plug in the USB cable and the GPS receiver. Now if you have Vista, the website says you are on your own. With XP they give you step by step instructions. Well, the best deal, if you have Vista or XP 64 Bit - don't even bother. The software / driver will not work at all, nothing, nada. So you have to find a 32 bit machine to do this update. My Aspire One netbook did the job. Then you have to remove the GPS when you start up the RDA GPSL-55 software, and you have to enter the GPS serial number. Once all that craziness is done, you might get lucky and the GPS will update with it's brand spanking new database. Mine finally did after three tries.
So software set up - just not cool at all. Forget 64 Bit operating systems. And forget about any kind of real live software support on the Cobra website; it just doesn't exist at all.
So now that the little reciever is updated, I installed this in the car. Cobra needs to take a lesson from Garmin, or the GPS industry, about car mounts for devices. They shipped the cheapest piece of garbage to hang this on your windshield. The metal is nothing to bend. The suction cups are exactly that, suction cups that are very hard to push on or remove. So, bottom line this thing looks like garbage hanging from the windshield.
The power cord is way too short. I had to stretch is a long ways to work in my Buick Rendezvous (I know a radar magnet) - if those suction cups ever let go, this unit is flying to the back of the bus quickly. The Mercedes was a little better.
There's one other critical design flaw. The socket for the GPS receiver is a standard mini-USB connector; cheap and not exactly super secure. Definately not an automotive type connection. The power socket is right beside that GPS socket. The GPS almost covers up the power socket, and when you stretch the power cord, it stresses the GPS connection. First time around, the GPS wasn't seated right because the power cord pulled it out.
Now the good stuff. Power this up, and you are greeted by one of the nicest female voices I've heard on an electronic device in a long time. And then you get to look at the display. Well Cobra could have spent maybe five more dollars on this display. It is super low res, the icons are really goofy looking and super clunky. For some unknown reason, they love how much electricity the unit is getting, there's this huge battery in the default display that tells you 14.7V, or whatever is going in. I would haver rather seen the speed displayed.
Customization through the menus is not super intuitive, there's only 4 buttons to work with. They don't always do exactly what I thought they should, a minor annoyance.
Now on to the testing. About 1/4 mile from a camera monitored intersection, the displayed turned to a camera with a green donut, and the Cobra lady said Photo Alert. A bit closer, and an arrow appeared at the top. Closer and the donut got larger and yellow. Closer still, the donut turned red, by that time I was pretty much at the edge of the intersection. This was pretty cool. Worked every single time.
I found a policeman staked out on a road, doubled back and got the Ka alert mentioned at the top of the review. Given the two level signal strength, it wasn't a false alarm. And the fact that he pulled somebody over, well it was real.
The Caution zones is kind of interesting. It's apparently areas where a lot of accidents have been reported. Sure enough, Caution came on with an exclamation point in the middle of the donut, and Cobra lady told me Caution Alert. The color change was exactly like the Camera alert. The two that came up were in front of a school at a very busy intersection. And the second was in front of a hospital.
False alarms. It did a pretty darn good job rejecting them. O'Hare airport is notorious for heavy duty false alarms everywhere. I got X and Kz alarms, but all were only one ball signal strength. The other great thing this unit does, once the alarm is set, you get the voice plus a tone. Then you get tone. And if the signal doesn't get stronger, the tone gets quieter; but the X or Ka radar gun icon stays lit up. It's a really great way to work.
Multiple alarms - got a caution and an X band alarm at once. The Caution stayed huge and the X band radar showed up on the screen. So both were there to see.
Highway driving. Well this is a bit strange and will take some getting used to. Those Caution and Photo alarms are all based on GPS coordinates data. When you travel along a highway, sometimes you will pass near one of those areas. Well you have to look closely at the icon for the direction the arrow is pointing. If it's...Read more›

Microsoft Streets & Trips with GPS Locator 2011 Review

Microsoft Streets and Trips with GPS Locator 2011
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I am Donna's husband and I got Microsoft Streets & Trips 2011 with the USB GPS receiver a few days ago. I didn't really notice any changes between the 2009 version and the 2011 version of Streets & Trips. Just newer maps. I give the software 5 stars.
The GPS receiver that comes with Streets & Trips is the "u-blox 5 GPS and GALILEO Receiver" by ublox. [...] I downloaded the "u-center GPS evaluation software" [...] and installed in on my desktop computer and my Acer netbook computer. I then plugged the USB GPS receiver into each computer and, using the u-center software, monitored the GPS receiver's performance. Here is what I found:
The GPS receiver would not lock up when plugged directly into the netbook no matter how long I left it. It would find one or two satellites but that was all. When I connected it to the netbook using the included USB extension cable, it would lock up in 5 - 10 minutes. After it got a lock, it's performance seemed about as good as the other GPS receivers that I have. When I plugged the GPS receiver into my desktop computer it took 5 - 10 minutes to lock up and again, it's performance seemed about as good as the other GPS receivers that I have. The GPS receiver does not have any type of battery or super-capacitor backup so every time it is unplugged it forgets all of the satellite almanac data and has to do a cold start each time it is plugged in.
I also have a GlobalSat BU-353 GlobalSat BU-353 Waterproof USB GPS Receiver. It is a much better GPS receiver. Because it has a super-capacitor backup, it retains the satellite almanac data and is able to do a warm start when it's plugged in. It is able to acquire a lock in less than a minute. It also works fine with the Streets & Trips software. I recommend you buy Streets & Trips WITHOUT the USB GPS receiver and get the GlobalSat BU-353 GPS receiver instead.

Bushnell GPS BackTrack Personal Locator Review

Bushnell GPS BackTrack Personal Locator
Average Reviews:

This item is great for both the backwoods and shopping mall. I got it for my wife to find her car when she exits the mall... Yes, some of the parking lots are huge! The day that we received it, we went to a new park and brought the Backtrack along. By the time we got to the field that our grandson was at, we couldn't see the parking lot, and there were 4 of them.
When the game was over, I pressed the automobile icon and followed the direction that the Backtrack pointed us to. It led us to within a few feet of the car!
It works great and is easy to use.

LG Octane Phone (Verizon Wireless) Review

LG Octane Phone (Verizon Wireless)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is a decent phone for a feature phone. Its not amazing, but its not awful either.
Pros:
-Easy to navigate and use
-Comfortable to handle
-Does not turn off or on when in a pocket or purse
-Does not pocket dial when in a pocket or purse
-Can use your own music as ringtones stored on a MicroSD card
-QWERTY keyboard
Cons:
-Internal keyboard too flat- makes it hard to distinguish buttons from one another
-Messages are threaded but the complete message does not show at once unless it is very short. Means an extra click to read the full message if the first 2 lines don't jog your memory.
Would I buy it again when this one dies? Probably not. But it'll do for now. I use it primarily for texting (3000+ texts a month) and rarely for talking (less then 2 hours a month).

Terk HDTVa Indoor Amplified High-Definition Antenna for Off-Air HDTV Reception Review

Terk HDTVa Indoor Amplified High-Definition Antenna for Off-Air HDTV Reception
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Having spent a bundle acquiring a Sony LCD HDTV and upgrading our Dish service to include its limited set of HDTV channels, we were anxious to see what an Over-the-Air Antenna might add.
In all, we tested 5, including the highly rated Zenith log periodic (about $40 at Sears), an amplified Samsung (about $99 at Best Buy), an outdoor Terk 32 (about $80 at Circuit City), our old roof mounted VHF/UHF antenna (circa 1985), and the amplified Terk HDTVa (about $50 at Radio Shack). The Terk HDTVa won hands down; no contest, blowing away the much touted Zenith.
We live in the sparsely populated, low hill countryside of Western Massachuetts. The THDTVa effortlessly brings in between 20 and 30 analogue and digital (incl hdtv) channels broadcast most from 12 to 45 miles away, and some as far as 65+ miles away in Connecticut. Some digital OTA channels actually come in more sharply than some of the (Dish) satellite digital channels.
This is definitely a keeper: a great value, gem of an antenna. So good, in fact, we are debating giving up our $50/month Dish service, putting $15 of that to Netflix to replace HBO, and banking the remaining $35.

Bushnell Backtrack Point-5 Personal GPS Locator (Gray)
Average Reviews:

I just received and tested the Bushnell BackTrack 5 points.
Very easy to configure and to use. Really satisfied with it.
Why not 5 stars ?
Just due to the fact that the power turns off automatically after 5 minutes.
So if you're using your BackTrack and you're more than 5 minutes away from the destination you would like to go back, you've always to press a key within 5 minutes or the BackTrack will turn off.
In my opinion the turn off time should also be part of the basic configuration like time, temperature, distance, etc.

Audiovox ECCO Personal Pocket GPS Locator Review

Audiovox ECCO Personal Pocket GPS Locator
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I'm familiar with personal GPS locators that are designed to take you back to a point. This unit appears to work and allows me to set three points and then tells me how far I am from that point. It does that even indoors (most of the time). Sometimes satellite lock is flakey and takes a lot longer but usually lock is is about 30 seconds.
My problem is, we are instructed to "calibrate" the unit (thus the 3 stars). The laminated 'reference guide' says, hold the unit face up. So I assume that means face pointing to the sky, then, press and hold location 1 button until you get a message saying to "hold flat and press the lock button". You do that and it says to slowly (doesn't define slowly) around keeping the face up 360 degrees (ending up back where you started - 360 degrees is a full circle). No problem so far. then press the Hold button again. You are told to slowly turn the unit another 360 degree FACE DOWN and end with the FACE UP and press the lock button when 'face up and you should be 'calibrated'. I do all of that but it says calibration "incomplete" and the card say says, repeat the steps until completed... WELL, I've tried that dozens of times indoors and outdoors and it's always incomplete!
I searched the web and apparently an older model had you rotate only a half circle or 180 degrees to calibrate so I tried that also no luck.
The GPS portion seems to work fine but the electronic compass just won't calibrate.
I love the idea it fits on my key ring and I'm not sure how important "calibration" is. So I'll wait and watch here at Amazon Comments and the web for others that achieve 'calibration'...
It even displays a Satellite map much like my car GPS unit showing satellite sky location, strength and number of acquired satellites. If only I could 'calibrate'...
Model IDC-80001-001 (Audiovox)
IDC Design Corp (made in China of course)
UPDATE: I finally got the unit to calibrate. First, I charged the unit (fully), then when it came time to turn over or move in a circle I did it at ARMS LENGTH and mad a 2 foot circle, it worked and calibrated!

Bushnell GPS BackTrack Personal Locator Review

Bushnell GPS BackTrack Personal Locator

This item is great for both the backwoods and shopping mall. I got it for my wife to find her car when she exits the mall... Yes, some of the parking lots are huge! The day that we received it, we went to a new park and brought the Backtrack along. By the time we got to the field that our grandson was at, we couldn't see the parking lot, and there were 4 of them.
When the game was over, I pressed the automobile icon and followed the direction that the Backtrack pointed us to. It led us to within a few feet of the car!
It works great and is easy to use.

I was given this product as a gift because I'm always losing things. Now I have a tag on my keys and cellphone and also on my ipod which I recently lost under my couch. Within minutes I was able to find it since the beep from the tag is real loud The tags are really small which makes it easy to attach without being bulky. I highly recommend it.

Mommy I'm Here cl-103pk Child Locator, Pink Review

Mommy I'm Here cl-103pk Child Locator, Pink
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This child locator works well and performed exactly as expected. My 4 year old called it his "teddy bear beeper" and loved wearing it. Most importantly, he also understood what it was for, meaning if it beeps he knew that Mom and Dad were looking for him. So during our trip to Asia, we actually did lose him in a very crowded store. I activated the transmitter and was able to hear the beep. He was 2 aisles down from where we were and he ran out looking for us. The teddy bear receiver uses 2 CR2032 (flat discs) batteries; the transmitter uses one A23 12 volt battery. These batteries are not cheap. The 12 volt battery in the transmitter was dead when it arrived. During the trip, it lasted only about 3 days without even being used. I'm giving it a pretty good rating only because it worked well in a real life situation.

Mommy I'm Here cl-305 Child Locator with New Alert Feature, Blue Review

Mommy I'm Here cl-305 Child Locator with New Alert Feature, Blue
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
We have a very active 2 1/2 year old who loves to run. We have a few trips planned that will involve being in large, crowded spaces and obviously my husband and I were both concerned about her safety (even with both of us watching her closely). Those of you with active toddlers know how fast they can hide! we tried it once and quickly realized the "alert feature" was annoying. 25 feet sounds pretty far. It's not. Have your child stand in front of you and measure it. We were walking through an outdoor event with her in front of us and it kept going off. And the alarm is very high pitched...and yes, very loud. It will work great when you want it to. But it was annoying us and everyone around us. A couple of times she was standing only 2-3 feet in front of us but with objects in between and the alarm would still sound. Finally I just turned it off. The actual company (My Precious Kid) the product is shipped from was very helpful when I e-mailed them about my disappointment with the product. I asked if I could return it and instead get the brown locator (without the alert feature)and they sent it right out. So far we haven't had to use it, but it is peace of mind knowing we can just press the button to hear her. Obviously this product isn't meant to be "instead of" watching your child. But it is so easy for a todddler to get ahead of you and be one aisle over in a department store out of your sight. I've kept it on her shoe even with trips to the local mall. So while the "alert feature" didn't work for our needs, the original product has.

You would have much better results from purchasing a better designed brand for more money .since this one broke very soon after receiving it . They are also unreliable because the devices' connection to the battery is poorly designed. I returned mine within the time given but they have not refunded my money.i bought a more expensive product for 49.99 that actually worked amazingly well. dont go for cheap knock offs!

SPOT Personal Tracker Review

SPOT Personal Tracker
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Please ignore the comments about Globalstar service below, he has no clue about this product. Globalstar is having problems with its duplex service S-band amplifiers which only affects two-way traffic. I should know I have a Globalstar satellite phone. SPOT uses the L-Band uplink (simplex modem) which is used to track trucks etc. this network is running at full efficiency. I have this product and it works better than my expectations. About this product: it is not a personal locator beacon and if you wish to use this solely for emergencies, I would recommend another product. A true personal locator beacon because it works in all conditions and all-terrain (I also own one by ACR). SPOT needs to have an uninterrupted view to the satellite. In other words in heavy canopy this product does not work very well but in broken canopy or in the open this product works great (samething is true with my handheld GPS). I use this product to communicate with family and friends on my progress when backpacking, biking, or just out and about. I do use this product in heavy canopy areas and send a signal when I cross a road or powerline crossing. I still carry my personal locator beacon for real emergencies but this product helps in non-emergency situations. For more operational details you can download the manual at www.findmespot.com
My cell phone doesn't work when I'm away from cell towers or underwater while scuba diving nor in caves. Similarly SPOT will not work if it cannot contact the satellite. As with all communication devices, they all have limits and parameters that they operate in. You should know this before buying any product like this.

Give your loved ones full peace of mind when you're on the mountain with the Spot Satellite Messenger. Whether you're just checking in, allowing others to track your progress, or calling for help, Spot gives you a vital line of communication with friends and family when you want it, and emergency assistance when and where you need it. Spot employs a GPS satellite network to acquire its coordinates, then sends its location to the recipient of your choice, complete with a link to Google Maps and a pre-programmed message. Unlike personal locator beacons, however, Spot does more than just call for help. The SpotChecking feature, for example, lets you notify your SpotTeam--the friends and family you've chosen as your contacts--and tell them all is well, notify them of your location, or save waypoints so you can review your route at a later date. You can also activate the SpotCasting feature to let friends and family follow your progress in real time (every 10 minutes). Anyone with access to your account information can log on and view your route, complete with virtual views provided by Google Maps. SpotCasting is a terrific feature for mountain climbers looking to celebrate their accomplishments with their loved ones.
The most important feature, however, is Spot's ability to call 911 in the event of a life-threatening or other critical emergency. Once activated, Spot will acquire your exact coordinates from the GPS network, and then send that location along with a distress message to a GEOS International Emergency Response Center every five minutes until cancelled. The Emergency Response Center will then notify the appropriate emergency responders based on your location and personal information. Responders may include local police, the highway patrol, the Coast Guard, an embassy or consulate, or other emergency response and search-and-rescue teams. Even if Spot can't acquire its location from the GPS network, it will still attempt to send a distress signal--without your exact location--to the Emergency Response Center, which will still notify your emergency contacts of the signal and continue to monitor the network for further messages.
Spot works around the world, including in virtually all of the continental United States, Canada, Mexico, Europe, and Australia, and portions of South America, Northern Africa, and Northeastern Asia. And provided you're in a good coverage area, Spot offers a 99 percent probability of sending a successful message within 20 minutes. As a result, Spot is ideal for anyone with a taste for outdoor adventures, including boaters, kayakers, sailboarders, archaeologists, skiers, climbers, pilots, business travelers, snowshoers, and just about anyone else.
Spot requires two AA lithium batteries, with a battery life of up to one year in standby mode, 14 days in SpotCasting mode, or 7 days in 911 mode. And thanks to the water-resistant housing (safe in 1 meter of water for up to 30 minutes), you needn't worry about using Spot in adverse conditions. Spot measures a compact 2.75 by 4.38 by 1.5 inches (W x H x D), weighs 7.37 ounces, and carries a one-year limited warranty.
Communication Functions:
Alert 9-1-1 dispatches emergency responders to an exact location
Ask for Help sends a request for help to friends and family with your location
Check In lets contacts know where you are and that you are okay
Track Progress sends and saves your location and allows others to track your progress using Google Maps
