(More customer reviews)I just finished installing the fish finder and took it out on the lake for the first time.
Installation was pretty easy. I had to read and follow the instructions but I had no problems. I will say I found it very hard to drill holes in a perfectly good boat.
On the lake, the GPS was great. The fish finder was very good also. It put me on fish, just not the right ones.
The only complaint I have is the fish alarm won't go off unless I show the fish icon. Maybe I just haven't figured that out yet.
Overall, it is everything I wanted and I am very satisfied.

They are very simple to use and do not cause my incandescent bulbs to squeal like some dimmers do. This is great in our nursery so we can keep the lights dim in the evening. I will continue to buy more of these as I add these to other rooms in my house. They take up a fair amount of space in the wall box, but it shouldn't be an issue if you route your wires appropriately.

Valentine One Concealed Display for Radar Detector Review

(More customer reviews)I had to get this because some dumb swine saw my light on the radar detector and chased me three miles down the interstate to see what the light was. Fortunately I was not speeding (obviously I have a radar detector) so all he could do is look for it on my dash when he pulled up next to me, but I had already taken it down so he could not see it. It did make me laugh though, he got so butthurt about it that he had his buddy cop ride my bumper for ten miles a few minutes later in the hopes that I had put the radar detector back up when he drove off. Also, people read this and ask do people really ride your bumper when they see you have a radar detector? YES!! It is beyond annoying. They can get their own radar detector or go the speed limit instead of trying to mooch off of someone else. So, long story short, if you have a V1 and drive a car (because trucks are higher up and normally people cant see the V1) then get this, unless you like dealing with mooches and annoying cops. The product came on time, and installs in five minutes or less. It comes with a groove in the back so you can put it on the power plug. If you have it hard wired into your dash it comes with little stickys so you can stick it to anywhere in your car, just as long as the wire can reach the radar detector. The only complaint I have is that it does not make the sound, the radar detector still makes the noise, so it takes some getting used to to not look at the radar detector anymore to see where the signal is coming from.

Streets and Trips 2010 Review

(More customer reviews)I've used MS S&T since it was initially offered (pre-affordable GPS) and gradually watched it decline in usefulness as the net and technologies evolve. With this current version, even with the few improvements over the 2009 version, I wouldn't recommend it at all to a new user and only would recommend it as an upgrade if your version is more than 2 years old (unless you can find it for less than twenty bucks).
While netbooks (and to some extent the new generation of energy efficient processors just coming out this Xmas) have extended the life of this product, it is just not as functional while traveling as a good GPS unit. I still use it for planning, but more and more I find other online mapping tools more useful as wifi becomes more ubiquitous and 4G broadband adds coverage. The maps are not updated (I find major local errors still uncorrected after 4 years here in Ohio and on a trip to California, numerous serious flaws in Sacramento, the Napa Valley, and the Sonoma Valley - not to mention an abrupt loss of functionality along the way).
I like (and have) the GPS version while on the road at night (using the night map) and also use it while traveling to find side trips of interest (one thing not a strong point of auto GPS devices). But our Garmin GPS is much stronger for routing and seems to have a much better POI dataset. In fact, the online mapping services also have better POI info and MS S&T is unlikely to improve unless it is integrated with Bing or something.
Overall, licensing restrictions (1 machine - should be at least 2 including a laptop/netbook), lack of adequate data revision/updating, and the availability of cheaper GPS units and wifi, I'd say - give this one a pass unless you have a very compelling reason to use it.
Edit 7/12/2010 - Somehow I got the licensing wrong, actually S&T DOES allow 2 installs. My bad.

Celestron SkyScout Personal Planetarium Review

(More customer reviews)I ordered my SkyScout in September, hoping that the initial rush on this item was over and that it would be in stock (as listed) when I ordered it. Sadly, it was actually out of stock, and took a few months to arrive. The unit powered up and seemed to function, but was unable to get a GPS fix in a clear field. Hoping that it was a simple matter of updating the unit, I attached it via USB to my computer and followed the simple directions on the screen. It updated quickly and easily, but I still was unable to obtain a GPS fix. Using the instructions provided, I contacted Celestron, and was directed to return the unit to them for evaluation and repair. Less than two weeks passed, when a new unit straight from Celestron arrived in the mail. This one worked perfectly and as advertised, and without any problems!
Now that I've actually used my SkyScout, I can say that it is great fun to use! Now, December and January in Wyoming isn't the best time of year to be outside at night...wind chill last night was -40F for example, but the SkyScout still works like a champ. Multiple modes of function exist as listed in the description, but my personal favorite is being able to identify just about anything you can see with the naked eye in the night sky. Just view the object through the sky scout, push a button, and you'll get the name of the object as well as at least a few lines of text of information. Brighter objects or better known objects also have an audio commentary that will teach about the history and/or significance of what you're looking at.
While I was disappointed about my first SkyScout not functioning properly, the quick customer service and the replacement working flawlessly have overcome my initial disappointment. The SkyScout is quite simple to use and provides a great way for anyone who can read to start to learn the night sky. I highly recommend it for individuals with an interest in astronomy, families, star parties, and youth groups such as the Boy Scouts.

Leviton VPI06-1LX, Vizia + Digital 600W Incandescent Dimmer, Single Pole and 3-Way, White/Ivory/Almond Review

(More customer reviews)The build quality is better than most standard SP and 3-way dimmers, the package came with three different color faces and it can be used as either a SP or 3way (no face plate however)... actually it's a 3way that has one of the terminals taped off for use as a SP, then take off the tape to access the 3rd terminal. For the most part it's what I expected, EXCEPT!!!.... unless I missed it in the description, it took installing the switch to realize something wasn't working right, I was replacing an old dimmer in a standard 3-way configuration (leaving the other 3-way switch alone was the plan), it took 5 minutes to get the switch swapped out for the new one, but it didn't work right. I checked the wiring 3 times, changed the location of the dimmer from the hot to the load location and back again, rechecked I had the 2 travelers right... but still it didn't work.
So I went to the directions (fished them out of the garbage actually) to see what I could be missing. Buried at the bottom of the Warnings & Cautions list was the answer: "Vizia Dimmers are NOT compatible with standard 3-way or 4-way switches, the MUST be used with compatible Vizia coordinating remotes...", SO this means I need to buy another Vizia switch to replace the other 3-way switch on the circuit.
I wish I had know this before I bought the first switch, but into it for $20... I needed to spend another $16 to make it work. The product is great and works as advertised when you get all Vizia parts, I'm just put off because it basically cost me $36 to replace one 3-way dimmer.

It is excellent when it works....the only problem is that the coverage is based on the AT&T coverage map and it stinks in my area. When paying 14.95 a month you would think coverage would be better than what it is.....Just check your local AT&T coverage to see how it will work for you.
Battery power is better than I expected...it lasts me about 3 to 4 days depending on how much I locate it or have it scheduled to locate every 10 to 30 minutes. Its larger than I thought it would be so hiding it was a little more difficult but I found a good hiding spot...
It will text or email you when battery is low or car is moved (if it's in good coverage area) Also when the car is moved it will locate the device every 5 minutes for two hours which I liked.
So, all in all, if the coverage in my area was better and it was a bit smaller, it would be perfect!

I left my car in the airport parking lot and when I returned, I could not remember where it was parked. I am glad I had the Auto Finder with me. I thought I was parked in one section, but when I got there, I couldn't find my car. Once I remembered that I had the Auto Finder with me, I pulled it out and found my car very quickly. It saved me a bunch of time.
Another review on this site said that the device is a little tough to learn how to use. I agreed with that statement initially, but once I watched the instructional video, I found that it wasn't too difficult. I just practiced using it at my condo complex a couple of times and had it figured out pretty quickly.
I would definitely recommend this item to anyone who forgets where they park a lot.

LG Migo Verizon VX1000 Mobile Child Phone with battery and wall charger Review

(More customer reviews)I purchased this phone after calling verizon to make sure I can activate the phone. I was told, it should have instructions in the box. The box came empty but for a phone user manual. Brought it over to the verizon store and after 2 hours and although friendly service, nothing happened. I was told they could not activate this without it's cell number. I then called Amazon and was told they did not have this information and did not know what to tell me. I called the third-party seller , gamzi digital and to date, I have yet to receive a return call. So sending this back for a full refund, and checked online one last time. I went to the verizon website and filled in the phone's ESN and then I get "congratulations, you can activate your phone online"! I followed the steps and hit a snag, "cannot activate the phone" message came up and I had to dial an 800 number. Talked to the rep and was told that the migo has to be on a specific plan, which verizon does not offer anymore, so no can do! If there is anyone out there who knows how to activate this phone, please let me know. Planning to return this next week sometime.

Universal Mini Car Vehicle GPS GSM Tracker Tracking Locator Review

They are easy to use (open it, plug in a SIM card from a GSM phone provider - you have to disable the PIN code entry of the SIM card- sms (text) a code to change the password) and you can get either the location or a URL with location information that gets maps.google.com to quickly show you where the tracker is located on a map. It even has a GPRS feature that continually shows where the tracker is located. I have not used this feature however as it needs a data contract.
The provided manual is in Chinese, however you can email the company to get an English manual.
Originally, the tracker worked in Europe only but not in the US, but the latest version works fine in the US.
I installed it in a car in Europe and works fine. I also installed it in a car in the US and it workd fine as well.
Make sure you specify that you need the newer worldwide version when purchasing.
There are three SMS commands:
password,666666,xxxxxx# --> change default password 666666 to new password xxxxxx (exactly 6 digits);
where,xxxxxx# --> (where xxxxxx is the password) get location of car;
url,xxxxxx# --> get a google maps url of car location which you click and you see where is the car exactly.
There are additional commands associated with GPRS/EDGE where the device will upload a continuous stream of location data, but I don't use them.
Excellent to know where your car is located once stolen. Mine is installed under the rear window and connected to the battery. Please be aware that as the unit is always connected and is always on, you can't leave the car unused for long periods of time as it will deplete the battery. I would suggest that you drive the car at least every week.

LOK8U NUM8-BLUE Child Locator GPS Watch Review

(More customer reviews)I bought this the first day it was available on Amazon. At first I was bummed that it didn't seem to lock onto a signal. I sent it back.
Then a little while later I was told there was a firmware update that fixed the initial issues. If you get your unit and you see horizontal black and white stripes (like a prison uniform) across the screen, don't fret: That's the watch updating before your eyes.
Apparently, this recent update fixes an issue with the watch locking onto a usable cell phone (GSM) signal and making proper use of it. Once it gets a good signal, it's able to partially locate the phone within a certain radius based on cell phone tower locations. That's good enough for a general knowledge of where you kid is.
But I was surprised to discover I was able to get an actual GPS signal from inside a car and in my home. There are limitations, of course. It located the watch in my 12th floor highrise office via cell phone signal (approximated) but not an actual GPS fix.
Also keep in mind that this isn't a James Bond movie watch. You will NOT get a blinking red dot on your computer screen moving across a map with every step your kid makes. The NUM8 is a "pinging" kind of locating device. It will report it's location if you ask it, whether by web portal or SMS (your cell phone), or if the strap is removed or ventures into/out of a defined geo fence.
There is a "live track" feature that sends data continuously say, if the strap becomes detached. Of course, this consumes battery power.
Once you understand the limitations of the technology, it's really quite a wonder. The smallest, kid friendly GPS/GSM device I know of. It really DOES look like a chunky, kids watch in the blue or pink.
However, my son is 4 years old and on the small side. He's only about 35 lbs and 3 feet tall, so the watch looks enormous on his teeny tiny wrists. It fits with the strap at the smallest setting. For this reason, it's impractical for him to wear it until he's a little older.
That said, I highly recommend this item if you're looking for a a tracking device for your child or special needs person.
